    Baidu's Apollo Go starts testing in London with Lyft

    Apollo Go, Baidu's robotaxi arm, began road-testing its purpose-built RT6 cars in London through Freenow by Lyft, starting in the borough of Brent with safety operators aboard. It puts a second operator on London streets after Waymo, and marks a Chinese robotaxi company pushing into a Western market. Public rides are planned for 2027, pending UK approval.

    Zoox wins the first federal OK to charge for a steering-wheel-free robotaxi

    NHTSA granted Zoox a commercial exemption from eight federal vehicle safety standards written for human-driven cars, the first time a purpose-built robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals has been cleared to charge fares in the US. The exemption covers up to 2,500 vehicles a year for two years. Zoox, which already runs free rides in Las Vegas, says paid service there comes first, with San Francisco and other cities to follow.

    Tesla starts Cybercab production and names its robotaxi cities

    In its Q2 results Tesla said Cybercab, the purpose-built robotaxi with no steering wheel, entered production at Gigafactory Texas, with engineering test drives on public roads and employee rides on the Texas campus. Tesla also published a coverage table for the first time: unsupervised service in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, a safety-driver service in the San Francisco Bay Area, and preparations underway in Phoenix and Las Vegas.

    Alphabet's results skip Waymo's ride count, and the losses grow

    Alphabet's Q2 release didn't mention Waymo once, so there's no updated rides-per-week figure from the company itself. What it does show is Other Bets, the segment whose revenue comes mostly from autonomous transport, roughly flat at $382M against $373M a year earlier, while its operating loss widened to $1.80B from $1.25B. Spending is climbing faster than the revenue it produces.

    Washington DC weighs its first robotaxi law

    The DC Council held a public hearing on the Autonomous Vehicle Deployment Authorization Amendment Act of 2026 (B26-0684), introduced by councilmember Charles Allen. It would let robotaxis carry paying passengers in the District for the first time, which today allows only testing. Rideshare-driver unions testified against it over lost work; disability advocates backed it for independence and access.

    US safety regulator warns robotaxis over first responders

    NHTSA told driverless-car makers that blocking ambulances and firefighters, or failing to recognize flashing lights and flares, is a danger to the public, and gave them until the end of July to bring solutions. The unnamed target points at the largest fleet, Waymo.

    Momenta, a GM-backed AV firm, goes public in Hong Kong

    China's Momenta, backed by GM, Toyota, Mercedes and Tencent, listed in Hong Kong at around a $9B valuation, raising about $752M to push its robotaxi commercialization. Notable that GM backs it even after shutting its own Cruise robotaxi.

    Waymo went fully driverless in San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Denver simultaneously, a jump from its usual city-by-city pace. It's employees-first, with public access coming, as Waymo pushes toward a million rides a week.

    Uber pushes to buy Delivery Hero

    Uber, the app that resells robotaxis in several cities, built a roughly 19.5% stake in Germany's Delivery Hero and floated a takeover worth about €10B, pausing its Uber Eats Europe expansion to chase it. A food-delivery move, but a sign of the mobility super-app forming around the AV rides Uber aggregates.

    US regulator moves to drop the brake-pedal rule for driverless cars

    NHTSA proposed updating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 135 so that vehicles built to never have a human driver, such as Zoox's robotaxi and Tesla's Cybercab, would no longer need hand or foot brake controls. They would still have to meet the same stopping-distance targets through other tests, and cars that keep manual controls are unaffected. The public comment window ran through late July 2026.
